Near Southside Employment Connection

Project Background

Near Southside Employment Coalition, or NSEC, is a nonprofit employment and training agency in St. Louis dedicated to helping people become self-sufficient through long-term employment. Its mission is to equip job seekers with quality training, connection to resources, and access to opportunities necessary to obtain employment leading to stable lives.

As part of its organizational launch and brand development, NSEC needed a visual identity that could communicate credibility, inspire trust, and connect with multiple audiences, including job seekers, employers, community partners, funders, volunteers, and neighborhood stakeholders. The brand needed to feel professional and accessible while reflecting the organization’s role as a connector between people, training, resources, and sustainable employment.

Creative, Design & Messaging Approach

The creative direction centered on the idea of connection as a pathway to stability. NSEC’s work is not only about helping people find jobs; it is about helping individuals and families access the training, support, and opportunities that make long-term employment possible. That idea shaped the logo, color palette, collateral, and messaging system.

The final logo uses an abstract human figure system to suggest movement, support, and collective progress. The upward-reaching shapes convey empowerment and forward motion, while the grouping of figures reflects community, partnership, and shared opportunity. The mark was designed to feel active and optimistic, reinforcing NSEC’s role in helping job seekers move toward greater independence and stability.

The color palette balances professionalism with approachability.

  • Deep blue communicates trust, reliability, and institutional credibility.
  • Green reflects growth, renewal, opportunity, and economic mobility.
  • Purple adds distinction, warmth, and a sense of community identity.

Together, the palette gives the brand a polished nonprofit presence while remaining welcoming to the people and communities NSEC serves.

Typography and layout choices were kept clean, direct, and highly readable. Because the brand would appear across business cards, stationery, brochures, flyers, social media, signage, and presentation materials, the visual system needed to work across both formal and outreach-driven communications. The design system uses strong headings, clear hierarchy, generous white space, and consistent iconography to make information easy to understand and accessible across audiences.

Messaging Strategies

The messaging strategy was built around three priorities:

Position NSEC as a trusted workforce connector.
NSEC serves as an employment specialist by providing comprehensive employment services at no cost to clients. Its services include direct job placement with employers, resume preparation, career assessments, social service referrals, transportation assistance, and employer services that provide access to qualified applicants.

Connect employment to long-term stability.
The brand messaging needed to communicate that employment is more than a paycheck. NSEC’s story explains that the organization was founded in 1983 by churches and social service agencies seeking to address unemployment in South St. Louis, based on the belief that employment is more than a way of making ends meet.

Speak clearly to multiple audiences.
The materials were designed to serve job seekers, employers, donors, volunteers, and partners. Flyer and brochure content highlighted direct services, including job placement, resume preparation, career assessment, social service referral, transportation assistance, and employer access to qualified applicants. Business cards and stationery created a professional point of contact, while presentation materials and branded templates gave the organization a consistent way to communicate its mission and services.
