Missouri Coalition Against Trafficking & Exploitation

Project Background

Empowering Through Action was developed as the visual identity for a two-day anti-trafficking summit convened through the Missouri Coalition Against Trafficking and Exploitation, or CATE. CATE is a statewide coalition focused on preventing and responding to human trafficking and exploitation, serving as a central resource for anti-trafficking service organizations and an education hub for communities across Missouri. The coalition’s mission is “a united community movement to prevent and respond to trafficking and exploitation,” and its vision is a community that is educated, aware, and supportive.

The purpose of the summi is to bring together providers, advocates, community leaders, and multidisciplinary partners working to strengthen Missouri’s response to trafficking and exploitation. The logo needed to communicate empowerment, statewide collaboration, survivor-centered learning, and the movement from awareness into meaningful action.

Creative, Design & Messaging Approach

The creative direction centered on the phrase “Empowering Through Action.” The summit identity needed to feel active, hopeful, and mobilizing while remaining grounded in the seriousness of anti-trafficking work. Rather than relying on fear-based or overly somber imagery, the logo uses movement, color, and geographic symbolism to communicate progress, shared responsibility, and community response.

The Missouri state silhouette immediately grounds the summit in place, reinforcing CATE’s statewide role and the importance of coordinated response across communities, regions, and systems. Inside the state shape, the stylized human figure reaching upward creates a strong sense of empowerment and agency. The gesture suggests leadership, hope, survivor strength, advocacy, and collective action.

The starburst element adds energy and focus. It functions as a visual cue for awareness, insight, and action—an intentional mark that suggests the moment when education becomes movement. This supports the summit’s purpose: bringing people together not only to learn, but to leave better equipped to respond.

The sweeping lines beneath the title reinforce momentum and connection. They visually move the eye forward, echoing the summit’s emphasis on skill-building, networking, coordinated community response, and turning ideas into action.

COLOR PALETTE

The color palette uses deep blue, bright blue, green, purple, and gold to create an identity that feels both professional and energizing.

  • Deep blue establishes credibility, trust, and stability. It anchors the logo and reflects the seriousness of statewide anti-trafficking coordination, systems-level collaboration, and survivor-centered work.
  • Bright blue adds energy, visibility, and forward movement. It helps the logo feel more dynamic and accessible, especially for event materials, digital promotions, signage, and conference communications.
  • Green represents growth, learning, and renewal. It connects to the summit’s emphasis on professional development, practical resources, and strengthening community capacity.
  • Purple communicates dignity, survivor respect, and social justice. It aligns with CATE’s values of respect for survivors, systems impact, transparency, knowledge seeking, and social justice.
  • Gold brings warmth, urgency, and optimism. Used in the starburst, it highlights the summit’s call to action and adds a hopeful visual accent.

Together, the palette balances the emotional weight of the issue with the summit’s forward-looking purpose: education, awareness, support, and action.

TYPOGRAPHY

The typography uses a bold, italicized sans-serif treatment for “Empowering” and “Action,” creating a strong sense of motion and confidence. The emphasis on these two words reinforces the core message: participants are not just gathering for information; they are being equipped to act.

The word “Through” appears in green, creating a bridge between empowerment and action. This visual hierarchy helps the phrase read as a process: empowerment happens through learning, collaboration, skill-building, and coordinated response.

The subtitle, “An Anti-Trafficking Summit,” uses a smaller italic treatment in purple. This keeps the event descriptor clear while allowing the main summit name to carry the emotional and visual energy of the brand.

Messaging Strategy

The logo’s messaging strategy was built around three priorities:

Emphasize statewide collaboration.
CATE describes its work as a statewide coalition with activities that include workgroups, policy advocacy, research and data collection, and standards of care. The Missouri silhouette and connected visual movement reinforce the idea that anti-trafficking response requires coordination across regions, disciplines, providers, and community systems.

Move learning into action.
CATE’s public-facing work includes training, events, and free resources designed to support best practices in understanding, preventing, and responding to human trafficking in Missouri. The summit identity needed to reflect that practical, action-oriented purpose.

Honor survivor-centered values.
Because CATE’s values include social justice, systems impact, transparency, knowledge seeking, and respect for survivors, the logo avoids sensationalized imagery and instead uses empowerment, movement, and connection as the central visual language.
